Here's a match race held on Louisiana Champions Day at The New Orleans Fair Grounds, December 1995 between two three year old fillies, Little Miss Leader, a thoroughbred, and Miss Fancy Patch, a quarter horse. Both horses carried 120 pounds and raced 870 yards, slightly less than a half mile.
