Carpenter Keith Forry repairs a patch of flooring in Mr. Madison's room that had suffered insect damage. The repair, called a dutchman, is made from the same wood was the original floors (heart pine) and closely matches the grain pattern of the original board. Farrar Woltz tests a graining sample to a newel post at James Madison's Montpelier. The pattern is based off of a surviving newel post fragment and it replicates the graining pattern of mahogany.
Bill Bichell, Gene Lyman and Chris Edwards install the pediment over the south door in the Drawing Room. The pediment is reconstructed but the design is based off of physical evidence and a surviving pediment at Monticello (which was built by the same carpenter). Video by Maggie Wilson.
A computerized router at the Gaston and Wyatt mill shop in Charlottesville, VA makes the pieces for the shutters are Montpelier. The shutters were designed after originals found in a barn on the Montpelier estate.
Decorative Painter Farrar Woltz grains the North Stair at Montpelier. Using two layers of glaze over a cranberry colored base coat she replicates the apperance of mahogany rails, newels and risers on the stair.
Carpenters at Montpelier (Gene Lyman and Bill Bichell) use a large circular saw to cut a rabbet joint into the bottom rail of the colonnade terrace's Chinese railing.
